Every listing photo of a house frontage includes the driveway, the walkway and the garage door, and those three surfaces are usually the largest uninterrupted areas in the shot. When they are grey and streaked, the whole photograph reads as tired — regardless of what the interior looks like.
The useful thing about exterior cleaning before a sale is that it is diagnostic as well as cosmetic. A great many owners conclude that a driveway needs resurfacing, a fence needs replacing or siding needs repainting, when what they are actually looking at is years of organic film. Clean it first and you find out what you are really dealing with. Sometimes the answer is still "repaint", but often the surface underneath is in perfectly good condition and the job is done.
That order matters financially. Washing a driveway costs a fraction of resurfacing one. Washing siding costs a fraction of painting it. Doing the cheap, reversible thing first means that when you do spend on the expensive, irreversible thing, you are spending it because the surface genuinely needed it.
It is also the right sequence technically. Paint, stain and sealer all need a clean, sound surface to bond to. Applying any of them over algae, mildew or ground-in dirt traps the growth underneath, and the finish lifts sooner than it should. If you are staining a fence or sealing pavers, washing is not an optional extra beforehand — it is the first step of the job.
For anyone managing a property rather than living in it, the same applies between tenancies. It is the point in the cycle when the exterior is easiest to access and when a clean frontage does the most work in listing photos.
